Living in Merrillville, Indiana: The US-30 Town Without a Square

Merrillville is the Lake County town people mean when they say they want the commercial corridor, not a courthouse lawn. I-65 and U.S. 30 do the organizing. Southlake Mall, medical offices, and the retail strip set the week. If you are hunting for a brick square you can walk after dinner, that is a different town, and I have already written that one. If you want a lake in the middle of the city and a Main Street you can use on a Saturday, that is Hobart. Merrillville is the highway town between them. That is not an insult. It is the product.

What Merrillville actually is

Start with the Town of Merrillville. Town Hall is at 7820 Broadway. The town is a municipal government with a council, a town manager, permits, and a parks department. It is not a lifestyle-center rendering, and it is not pretending to be Crown Point.

The geography is the honest first sentence. Merrillville sits in central Lake County on the U.S. 30 / I-65 cross. You can reach Crown Point to the south and Hobart to the east without changing counties. You can also live close enough to the highway that the week is all asphalt and signal lights. Both versions of the town exist. A listing that says "convenient to I-65" can mean a five-minute hop, or it can mean you hear the interchange from the driveway. Walk the block at the hour you would actually be home.

This is a car town. Errands cluster along U.S. 30 and Broadway. People who already work along 30, or who want Crown Point access without shopping for a downtown square, look here first. People who need a walkable center usually leave the showing and ask me about the square or about Hobart's lake.

Who it actually fits

Merrillville is often a good fit if you want a house, a short hop to I-65, and a grocery-and-pharmacy run that does not require a second town. It is a weaker fit if the whole reason you are moving is a historic square, a lake you can see from town, or a South Shore platform at the end of the block.

• Convenience is the amenity. U.S. 30, I-65, Southlake Mall, and the medical strip are the weekly map.
• Housing is mixed, not themed. Older subdivisions, ranches, two-stories, and some newer pockets.
• It is not walkable in the square sense. You will drive for almost everything.
• School lines are not a vibe. Most addresses sit in Merrillville Community School Corporation. Confirm the parcel.
• Price is usually the practical conversation. Interior streets and U.S. 30 frontage are not comps for each other.
• Tradeoff: no downtown square. Crown Point has one.
• Tradeoff: no lake-and-Main-Street combo. Hobart has Lake George and a brick Main Street.
• Tradeoff: no South Shore station in town. Rail means a drive to another city.

None of that is a ranking. It is a filter. If the problems are the ones you cannot live with, we should look at a different town. Love Thy Neighbor means I will say that out loud.

The corridor week: U.S. 30, I-65, and Southlake

U.S. 30 and I-65 are the daily roads. Broadway is the town's north-south spine. I will not invent a downtown-Chicago drive time. Drive it on a weekday, at the hour you would leave.

Southlake Mall is the enclosed regional mall on U.S. 30 just off I-65. The mall's own site lists 2109 Southlake Mall, Merrillville. Tenants change. The location does not.

If an old relative still talks about catching a show at Star Plaza, that theater closed in 2017 and was demolished. It is not a current amenity.

There is no train in Merrillville

The South Shore Line station map does not list a Merrillville stop. Closest rail is usually a drive to Hammond Gateway or a Monon Corridor stop in Hammond, Munster, or Dyer. Check the current timetable.

Schools: confirm the corporation by address

Most addresses inside the town are in the Merrillville Community School Corporation. Administration is at 6701 Delaware Street. Merrillville High School is at 276 East 68th Place. I will not invent a rating.

Crown Point schools are a different corporation. Listing remarks are not a map. Confirm the official zone for that parcel. Use Indiana GPS and the STATS Indiana school district map, then still call the corporation. If a private high school is part of the plan, Andrean High School is a Catholic 9–12 school in town at 5959 Broadway.

Prepare the school question the same way you prepare the house. Proverbs 24:27 (ESV): “Prepare your work outside; get everything ready for yourself in the field, and after that build your house.” Drive the corridor at rush hour. Stand on the lot. Confirm the corporation. Then write the offer.

Housing without a downtown product

You will tour a mix. Interior streets with ranches and older two-stories. Some newer pockets. Houses that sit close enough to U.S. 30 that the week is never quiet. None of that is a secret. Compare the last few closed sales on the street you want, not a Crown Point number.

One public snapshot is useful context. Realtor.com's Merrillville market page, as of June 2026, showed a median listing price of $279,900, a median sold price of $271,945, 187 active listings, and a median 54 days on market. That is a citywide snapshot, not the value of your house.

A Saturday that is not a square loop

The town says it has more than 20 parks. Merrillville Parks and Recreation is at 6600 Broadway, (219) 980-5911. Check the current town calendar.

Deep River Waterpark is the Lake County Parks water facility on U.S. 30. Lake County Parks lists it at 9001 East U.S. 30 in Merrillville. The woods-and-mill version is next door: Deep River County Park at 9410 Old Lincoln Highway in Hobart.

Turkey Creek Golf Course is the Lake County Parks public course in town, 6400 Harrison Street. The Lake County Public Library Merrillville branch is at 1919 W. 81st Ave. Methodist Hospitals Southlake is at 8701 Broadway. Purdue University Northwest is nearby, not in Merrillville (Hammond and Westville). Crossroads Regional Chamber of Commerce is the regional business network the town points to.

What this town is not

Start with the listings search on Realest.com. Filter to Merrillville. Then open the Merrillville homes page on Real Estate USA as a second window. Walk the lot twice. Once at noon. Once at the hour the trucks are on 30.
