Living in Hobart, Indiana: Lake George, Main Street, and Who It Actually Fits
I get this question a lot from people who already know Lake County: they want a real downtown, a lake they can see from town, and a house that does not require them to pretend they live somewhere else. Hobart is the one I name. It is a Lake County city with a brick Main Street and Lake George in the middle of town. It sits between the Merrillville / US-30 side and the Portage / Lake Station side. If that mix sounds like you, keep reading. If it does not, I will say so before we waste a Saturday.
I am Sash Joveski, managing broker at Realest Realty. We are the shop at 112 S. Main St., Suite B, in Crown Point. Licensed in Indiana and Illinois. Love Thy Neighbor.
What Hobart actually is
The location is the whole story, if you let it be. You can reach I-65, IN-51, US-6, and I-80/94 without living on top of any of them, depending on the street. You can also end up closer to highway noise than you expected. Hobart has a downtown you can walk, a lake you can use, and neighborhoods that grew up at different times because they did.
People who already live in Lake County often land here because they want a yard and a Main Street they will actually use. People coming from the Illinois south suburbs want a small-city feel that is still inside the county. If that is you, this mid-2026 read on why more Illinois buyers are looking at Indiana communities is useful background before you tour.
For permits, the city calendar, and who runs what, start with the City of Hobart.
Who it actually fits
Hobart is often a good fit if you want a downtown and a lake in the same city, and Lake County living without chasing a Crown Point price. It is a weaker fit if you need a South Shore station at the end of the block, if you only want new construction with a three-car garage, or if you want every errand on one commercial corridor.
- A real downtown and Lake George in one city. Main Street is brick. The lake is not a rumor on a brochure.
- Older streets and a few newer pockets. You will tour ranches, older two-stories, and lake-adjacent houses that do not look like each other.
- School City of Hobart for most city addresses. Confirm the parcel. Edges can sit near other districts.
- Highway access without living on US-30. I-65, US-6, and I-80/94 are nearby. The drive is real time, not a slogan.
- Tradeoff: no South Shore station in Hobart. Closest rail is usually Gary Metro Center, Gary/Miller, or Portage/Ogden Dunes, depending on the address.
- Tradeoff: lake lots and inland streets are different products. Do not price one from the other.
- Tradeoff: if you need new construction and a three-car garage, you will probably also look at Winfield, St. John, or Crown Point.
None of that is a ranking. It is a filter. If the problems are the ones you cannot live with, we should look at a different town.
Lake George and inland streets are not the same house
This is the part buyers skip. A house near Lake George is not interchangeable with a ranch four streets inland. The lake streets put you closer to water, downtown, and the city's public life. The inland streets usually give you a quieter lot. Neither is better. Compare the last few closed sales on the street you want, not the list price of the house you just toured. Lake-adjacent and inland can sit in the same city and still not be comps for each other.
I will not invent a 2026 Hobart median sale price. We do not have a verified one I am willing to put in print. Do not let anyone hand you a Northwest Indiana MLS median or a Crown Point number and call it Hobart. Those are other markets. Use current listings and recent closed sales on the streets you would actually live on.
Main Street, the library, and a night out
Downtown Hobart is a brick main street, not a lifestyle center. You can park, walk, and be done with a Saturday afternoon without getting back on a highway. I will not inventory every shop. Shops change. The street is the constant.
- The Lake County Public Library Hobart branch is at 100 N. Main St. It sits downtown with views of Lake George.
- The Hobart Art Theatre is at 230 Main Street. Live music and comedy in a historic downtown building. Check their calendar.
Festival Park is at 111 E Old Ridge Road, on the lake. The city runs the Lakefront Festival and the Summer Market there. I am not going to invent dates. Check the current calendar on the City of Hobart site. Those events are how a lot of people first decide they like this town, and whether they want to live near the activity or a few streets away from it.
A Saturday outside of downtown
If the lake and Main Street are the center, Deep River County Park is the other outdoor piece I mention out loud. It is at 9410 Old Lincoln Highway in Hobart. County park, not a city pocket park. Trails, river, room to walk. Pair it with Festival Park if you want the lake and the woods in the same day. If that Saturday sounds like enough, Hobart is starting to fit.
The commute, without slogans
I-65, IN-51, and US-6 handle most of the drive. I-80/94 is nearby to the north. Which road you use depends on the address and where you work. I will not invent minutes. Drive it at the hour you would leave, on a weekday.
There is no South Shore station in Hobart. Closest rail is usually Gary Metro Center, Gary/Miller, or Portage/Ogden Dunes, depending on the address. Pick the station you would actually use and check the current timetable. If rail is the whole reason you are looking, we should talk about towns that have a station first.
Illinois buyers: some of you will keep working in Illinois and live here. The useful question is whether the drive you would actually make is one you can live with in January. If you are still researching, that Illinois-to-Indiana buyer piece is the honest regional frame. Then come look at streets.
Schools: confirm the parcel
Most addresses inside the city are in the School City of Hobart. I will not invent a rating. Confirm the district and the attendance zone for the specific parcel before you write an offer. Listing remarks are not a map. Edges of the city can sit near other districts. If the school is the reason you are buying, we check the official zone first and the paint color second.
What you will actually tour
The housing stock is mixed. Inland you will see ranches and older streets. Closer to the lake you will see a different set of houses, some with water in the conversation and some just nearby. There are newer pockets. There is not a single Hobart that looks like a rendering.
If you want new construction and a three-car garage, say that early. You can still look in Hobart. You should also look at Winfield, St. John, or Crown Point, because that product shows up more often there. I would rather you see the right house in the next town than force a floor plan that is not here.
For a second inventory window, Hobart homes on Real Estate USA is useful reading. Use it as a wider view of what is active, then come back to recent solds on the street you care about. Active list price is a wish. Closed sale is the market.
If Hobart is close but not quite right
- Merrillville if you want the US-30 side and you care more about that commercial corridor than a brick downtown on a lake.
- Portage if you are pulled toward the lakeshore side of the county and the rail conversation is part of the deal.
- Crown Point if you want the county seat, a different downtown, and you already know you are shopping that price and that product.
Those are not insults to Hobart. They are the neighboring answers. Love Thy Neighbor means I will send you to the town that fits, including when it is not the one in the title of this post.
How to look at what is for sale
Start with the listings search on Realest.com. Filter to Hobart and look at what is actually active. Then open the Hobart hometown page. For a second window, use the Hobart homes page on Real Estate USA. Compare actives with recent solds. Ignore last year's asking prices and any median from a different city.
Hobart FAQ
Is Hobart a good fit if I commute toward Chicago?

What schools serve Hobart?
Most city addresses are in the School City of Hobart. Confirm the exact zone on the official site before you write an offer. Edges can sit near other districts.
Lake George streets or inland streets — what is the honest difference?
Near the lake and downtown Main Street you get water and a walkable brick center. Inland streets usually give you a quieter lot, and you drive for that same downtown loop. Neither is better. Compare the last few closed sales on the street you want.

Start at What’s your home worth?, then call (219) 801-0432 if you want a person to check the last 60 to 90 days of comparable sales. An online number is a start, not a listing price. We do not have a verified 2026 Hobart median I will quote.
